Proxy – Servers, tools and web proxies

What is a Proxy?

A proxy acts as an intermediate server on the Internet. In companies, for example, it is connected between the Internet and the company’s own network in order to save bandwidth. The use of proxy services as private users is more likely to preserve anonymity on the network. In this case, the proxy accepts the web requests as a broker, replaces the IP address with its own and then forwards them to the surveyed web server. The web server responds to the proxy. This means that the actual user remains invisible and protected from outside access.

Proxy to disguise the IP

There are many reasons to be anonymous on the Internet. Sometimes it just makes sense not to reveal yourself to the server. In particular, in the case of country locks, where the user’s IP address is used to decide whether or not to display content, the use of a proxy makes sense.

Read our detailed comparison of different proxy services, proxy servers and the corresponding tools. There we explain everything you need to know about proxies. If you decide to use a proxy, we have various instructions on how to set up and use proxies on the net. There you can also find out how to watch blocked youtube videos using proxies.

Web Proxy: Anonymously retrieve web pages

A real alternative to setting up proxies or installing proxy tools is the use of so-called “web proxies”. These are called up in the browser and offer the possibility of specifying a web address on the page. The server then collects the page and displays its contents. The IP address of the user is normally not passed on. Mature web proxies also offer the possibility of twisting the user agent or filtering out scripts and advertisements.

In our detailed comparison of different web proxies we explain to you where the strengths and weaknesses lie, which providers are really suitable and what you have to pay attention to when using web proxies.

Proxy lists: find free proxy servers

We list in our proxy list different free proxies for you. These are sorted by country and availability, which should help you to find the right proxy.

Proxy versus VPN

A proxy works as a “mediator” between you and the target server. In most cases, this happens anonymously, so your IP will not be passed on. You should keep in mind that this is not the case for all proxies, some of them pass not only the user agent but also your real IP. You can check this with our proxy checker.

The main purpose of “normal” proxies is the WWW, i. e. the retrieval of web pages. A special feature is the socks proxy. He/she can not only handle websites but also work with all other online services. For example, you can use a socks proxy to retrieve mails or play online games, if connected.

A VPN, on the other hand, is more like a tunnel in the Internet itself. All traffic is protected and the target server cannot detect your identity. In addition, your Internet provider is not able to monitor traffic.

When do I choose which solution to use? If you just want to have a quick look at a website or a blocked youtube video, use a proxy, in case of doubt even a web proxy. These are usually free of charge and serve their purpose. If you want to stay anonymous on the Internet, invest a few euros and use a VPN service of your choice.
